The Hosts file is used by the operating system to map human-friendly hostnames to numerical Internet Protocol (IP) addresses which identify and locate a host in an IP network. The hosts file is one of several system resources that address network nodes in a computer network and is a common part of an operating system's IP implementation. The Hosts file contains lines of text consisting of an IP address in the first text field followed by one or more host names. Each field is separated by white space (Tabs are often preferred for historical reasons, but spaces are also used). Comment lines may be included, and they are indicated by a hash character (#) in the first position of such lines. Entirely blank lines in the file are ignored.
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host # localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself. # 127.0.0.1 localhost # ::1 localhost
The Host download
Generally, a download manager enables downloading of large files or multiples files in one session. Many web browsers, such as Internet Explorer 9, include a download manager. Stand-alone download managers also are available, including the Microsoft Download Manager.
The Microsoft Download Manager solves these potential problems. It gives you the ability to download multiple files at one time and download large files quickly and reliably. It also allows you to suspend active downloads and resume downloads that have failed.
Host pools are a collection of one or more identical virtual machines within Azure Virtual Desktop. Each host pool can be associated with multiple RemoteApp groups, one desktop app group, and multiple session hosts.
This cmdlet will create the host pool, workspace and desktop app group. Additionally, it will register the desktop app group to the workspace. You can either create a workspace with this cmdlet or use an existing workspace.
Run the next cmdlet to create a registration token to authorize a session host to join the host pool and save it to a new file on your local computer. You can specify how long the registration token is valid by using the -ExpirationTime parameter.
We recommend that you don't enable any policies or configurations that disable Windows Installer. If you disable Windows Installer, the service won't be able to install agent updates on your session hosts, and your session hosts won't function properly.
To help secure your Azure Virtual Desktop environment in Azure, we recommend you don't open inbound port 3389 on your VMs. Azure Virtual Desktop doesn't require an open inbound port 3389 for users to access the host pool's VMs. If you must open port 3389 for troubleshooting purposes, we recommend you use just-in-time VM access. We also recommend you don't assign your VMs to a public IP.
Once you've uninstalled these items, this should remove all associations with the old host pool. If you want to reregister this host to the service, follow the instructions in Register the virtual machines to the Azure Virtual Desktop host pool.
When trying to download a file found on the Microsoft downloads center that starts with, for example, (some_GUID)/(some_file_name.ext) i get a timeout with "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".
Bear with me while i expand on the problem:It all started when i tried to download Windows XP mode for my Windows 7 machine. I went to the virtual PC site, then thru the motions of Windows Genuine Advantage which validated ok, but when it redirects to grab the file just times out with above error.(NB: i also tried with the latest Chrome and Firefox but no use due to the Genuine Advantage stuff, so i decided to stick with IE).
I am behind an ADSL2+ modem router connecting via wireless (Win 7 Pro laptop); so i hop over to the desktop connected via ethernet (Vista Business), and same result; begin to think site download.microsoft.com site is down. So i give it a break an read up on EDNS, flushing the cache, hosts file, etc...
Try again an hour later on the Win 7 machine, still no go; so i turn off the Win 7 (software) firewall, and lo and behold, i can connect and grab any files from download.microsoft.com; (...nice, so we have a Micro$0ft firewall preventing access to a Micro$0ft website, no wonder my auto-updates kept failing but that's another story).
But i still am not happy that the desktop connected via ethernet still cannot get to download.microsoft.com, even though i turned off all firewalls, defenders, anti-virus, etc. What is so special / specific about the url download.microsoft.com, any other site is ok, including www.microsoft.com.
There is a "feature" of Windows Firewall that actually treats the address "download.microsoft.com" as special, without this being documented anywhere (or at least i could not easily find any mention thru Google searches).
In the following example I will use the Desktop as a download location. From the "Save As" dialog box, click the Desktop icon on the left side.Click Save, this will save "hosts.zip" to your Desktop. From your Desktop right-click (hosts.zip) and select: Extract All from the menu.
This will open the newly created hosts folder on your Desktop.Double-click on the included mvps.bat file, this will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP, then it will copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location on your machine. Win7 users right-click and select: Run As Administrator
If you are using a HOSTS file now, check to see if there are any needed entries before you replace it with the new download. Several users have reported overwriting their entries for other programs. [more info]
Editors Note: Once you have completed the above you can delete the hosts.zip and the hosts folder from your Desktop. The MVPS HOSTS file is updated regularly so you can always return here if you are still unsure on "How To" or drop me a note and I'll try and assist.
This usually occurs when you copy the "hosts.zip" file to the location of the existing HOSTS file and then try to "Extract" the file. To prevent this prompt, unzip the file in a "temp" folder or use the above "Desktop" example.
This document describes the IP address(es) and hosts needed to configure your Cisco Content Security appliance for use with a static host for downloads, updates, and upgrades. These configurations are to be used for either hardware or virtual Cisco Email Security Appliance (ESA), Web Security Appliance (WSA), or Security Management Appliance (SMA).
Cisco offers static hosts for customers that have strict firewall or proxy requirements. It is important to note that if you configure your appliance to use the static hosts for downloads and updates, the same static hosts for downloads and updates must be allowed in the firewall and proxy on network as well.
You will want to test communication from the appliance to the specified updater server. In this instance, we are concerned with downloads-static.ironport.com. Using telnet, the appliance should have open communication over port 80:
The KB however, is more focused on firewall issues for port 9084 which is required. Since I was on the same layer 2 segment as my VCSA appliance, I was not applying any firewall rules that would be filtering traffic to this port with my hosts. I suspected DNS resolution.
A note here, if name resolution is working correctly, then I would suggest taking a look at some possible firewall filtering, especially if you are crossing routed boundaries between your ESXi hosts and vCenter Server.
Oracle HCAs might require a firmware upgradeto support the host drivers. You can download the firmware and optionROM following this procedure. For third-party HCAs, consult themanufacturer's documentation for the required firmware version.
This lets VS Code provide a local-quality development experience - including full IntelliSense (completions), code navigation, and debugging - regardless of where your code is hosted. 2ff7e9595c
